A Kia with 370 hp, four-wheel drive and a top speed of 270 km/h. If you had called that a few years ago, you were laughing hard. However, the Stinger is a car that we have to take very seriously.
The brand came from far, but did so with great strides: Kia has become big with budget cars, but now builds – as is well known – cars that can measure in all respects with the products of European volume brands. The South Koreans have the following objective, however. Also the so-called premium brands have to take a little bit into account with new competition from an unexpected angle. With the Stinger, Kia has renowned players like Audi (A5 Sportback) and BMW (4 series Gran Coupé) in the visor. And it has to be said, the end result looks particularly successful.
2018 Kia Stinger AWD Exterior Design
The typical ‘ tiger nose’ ‘ grille looks more impressive than ever, while the large air intakes and the prime LED headlights make sure that this Kia is taken seriously. And then there are the long bonnet, the beautiful notches in the flanks with air exhausts, the 19-inch wheels and the low, coupé-like rear with four doors and a large tailgate. A strong example of head designer Peter Schreyer, who was not the only Westerner involved in the development of Kia new top Model. His compatriot Albert Bafna, who worked until recently at BMW M Division, was responsible for cars like the M3 and M5, has been involved in the technical aspects of development.
In terms of technique, the 2018 Kia Stinger leans heavily on the G80, a model of Genesis, the brand of Hyundai. As a result, the top-Kia is unlike the less hefty models from the Kia range, with longitudinally placed motors, rear wheel drive and a chassis with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link rear axle. For an additional charge, four-wheel drive with torque vectoring and – for the first time at Kia – Electrically adjustable shock absorbers are available. An eight-stage automatic dispenser is one of the standard equipment, while there is a choice of motorcycles from a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 200 HP, a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 255 horsepower and a 370 hp strong Biturbo V6.
At our first brief introduction to Kia new flagship on the test track of the brand, the Stinger-washed-out is impressed with its energetic powertrain, nice balance and amazing direct control. The V6 makes a nice heavy sound and makes sure that this car moves forward as needed. In doing so, the car feels light, but not nervous. “The 2018 Kia Stinger has to live up to what his appearance promises”, so the purpose of the bag is to set himself up. Mission succeeded.
If there are still people who underestimate the Kia brand, they are now finally awakened. The Stinger is an impressive car with an insane design and high-quality technique. It will be a whole task to have Audi and BMW drivers find the way to the Kia showroom, but the Stinger is definitely washed up against the aforementioned A5 Sportback and 4-series Gran Coupé. And that’s for a newcomer a performance of format
