2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4×4² All-Terrain – What is This?
Equipped with extraordinary off-road capabilities, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4×4² All-Terrain is a daughter-in-hand development by Jürgen Eberle.
Mercedes has dropped an important ace for its image, especially in terms of offroad. This is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4×4² All-Terrain (squared, yes, just like the G-Class 4×4² ), born from the inspiration of Jürgen Eberle but that it is, in fact, simply an elaboration on the theme that will not plausibly see mass production.
On the Mercedes G-Class 4×4², we know everything and take for granted the peculiar characteristics in going for rocks and not only, but the transformation of a Mercedes E-Class in a 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4×4² All-Terrain was not at all obvious. The idea was born in the mind of Jürgen Eberle and was helped by over 20 employees of the Mercedes network, who were enthusiastically involved bypassing the classic bureaucratic design and delivery process, which otherwise would have required much longer times than those required.
And in fact, an E-Class has been completed that we could say is closer to a Monster Truck than you can imagine. If on the one hand, it has not changed in the lines of the body as well as in the luxurious interior, typically Mercedes, the same can not be said of the mechanics, which instead has been completely overturned. The same wheel axles were replaced in favor of gantry axles, then expertly integrated with the existing Multilink suspensions, even creating a support frame from scratch for the front, modifying the points of attachment to the rear and placing everything on the uniball. Those who think of offroad could already wince their eyes at the thought that an E-Class mounts gantry axles, which have wheels attached decidedly lower than the center of the axle, instead it is located above, but it was necessary. In this way the ability to overcome obstacles of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4×4² has been greatly increased, because in this way much more space has been freed up under the body, to pass over stones or to “dive” in fords up to 500 mm. The height from the ground has, in fact, more than doubled compared to the standard model, going from 160 to 420 mm from the ground, an enormity that in fact has made this E-Class more like an SUV.
All this has also created a distortion of the transmission, which has been appropriately revised, just as the wheels mounted have not been left to chance. These are rims borrowed from the R-Class, five-spoke with a bolted outer ring and with 285/50 R20 tires, which however contribute to the 20 cm track increase abundantly visible from the outside, also underlined by the increased wheel arches.
