2020 Audi A1 is completely renewed. Equipped with a flexible interior, and smart driving assistance. the price is quite reasonable.
The 2020 Audi A1 Sportback is the reinterpretation on the city car theme that Audi wanted to give to the smallest of its price list. It was 2010 when the first Audi A1 arrived on the market, but with this second generation, the Four Rings brand has changed its “entry level” quite substantially, even though it has grown in size. Let’s find out all the details until you get to our opinions in our test drive.
2020 Audi A1 Dimensions
It is not news that those that were once considered to be city cars are now growing in size. We have seen it done at Seat Ibiza, at the Volkswagen Polo and we do not see why it should not have been the same for the Audi A1, which despite everything is still the smallest car in the Four Rings list. Now the total length is 4.03 meters, the width is 1.74 meters and the height of 1.41 meters. But the revolution was not only in size but also in aesthetics, technique, and electronics. The body, for example, is composed of 27% hot-shaped steel, for optimal strength but also to ensure great torsional rigidity throughout the car block, while the front surface has a coefficient of aerodynamic penetration Cx of 0.31. Another car, in short.
What immediately catches the eye on the 2020 Audi A1 Sportback is the presence of the three horizontal slits in the upper part of the grille, just below the bonnet. It is a clear reference to what is the Sports Quattro of 1984. Then there are slender lines that are able to infuse energy and sensuality in the observer, both from the front and from the profile. In fact the upright C is definitely slender and wide, but also the whole front block seems to be carved. The generous horizontal distance of the optical units contributes to this effect, but also the single-frame grille which imposes itself in the whole view from the front. Then the wide track helps to give a muscular tone to the whole car, which is extremely sporty. At the rear then there are LED optical groups that recall the forms of hydrofoil – the prerogative of sailing sports – which at the same time help to ensure an idea of sufficiently accentuated width.
2020 Audi A1 Interior
One of the cornerstones that have followed this new Audi A1 Sportback since its launch was the possibility of customization, especially regarding the interior. All the lines in the cockpit are tense and angular to emphasize and perhaps to extremize the concept of sportiness, on which Audi wants to aim a lot with this model.
The same ventilation nozzles on both sides of the instrumentation – rigorously composed of a 10.25-inch digital display as per the good tradition of the Virtual Cockpit – seem to recall the shape of a military aircraft’s plank, while the door handles glide in turn an area normally left-linear.
The 8.8-inch touchscreen (or 10.1-inch depending on the set-up) is in the center of the dashboard but is slightly turned towards the driver, precisely 13 degrees, to be easily readable but above all better controllable. This may leave the passenger a little aside, which in this case has even more difficulty in helping the driver in case of need, and then it must be said that some key information such as media and navigator can be seen directly from the instrumentation.
On the other hand, all passengers on the 2020 Audi A1 Sportback enjoy more space and luggage with them, because not only has the cabin been expanded, but the trunk has grown in volume, being able to now accommodate 335 liters with raised seats and 1,090 liters with folded rear seats. An increase of 65 liters compared to the previous generation, while the boot access threshold is 67 centimeters from the ground.
2020 Audi A1 Advanced Driving Assistance
Remarkable the upgrade of the A1 Sportback also on the topic of active and passive safety, with the help of electronic systems that assist the driver, some of which are already present as standard, the pre sense front or assistance to maintain the lane: the first is the now clearing automatic emergency braking, which “sees” pedestrians, cyclists or other cars and detects the dangers associated with them as the risk of a rear-end collision (and takes measures independently if the driver does not respond to the input braking, crushing the brake independently), the second keeps the car in the right lane in the absence of the activation of the direction indicator.
Then these are flanked by other systems such as adaptive cruise control, which allows you to maintain the set speed until the safety distance from the car in front allows it, while braking if it becomes too small. The system works either with a manual gearbox (from 30 km / h in this case) or with an S-Tronic gearbox (in which case it has a range from 0 to 200 km / h), but with the automatic transmission the new Audi A1 Sportback is also able to stop directly autonomously, if the car that precedes it has decreased to such an extent the speed to stop.
Under the new Audi A1 Sportback live different suspensions between front and rear: the front is a McPherson scheme, while at the rear there is a more traditional axle with interconnected wheels and stabilizer bar. Optionally, it is also possible to choose a sportier outfit that stiffens the trim, as well as offering red brake calipers and increased brake discs.
The time has finally come to get behind the wheel of the 2020 Audi A1 and start our road test. We open the door and we are faced with interiors at the sight of very valuable workmanship. They are really beautiful even to touch, give the impression of great movement: it dominates in the middle of the dashboard the 10-inch touchscreen (the 8.8-inch one is standard, the other optional) perfectly set. Well-made seats for lateral containment.
Dashboard, now as always in the Volkswagen group, totally digital and customizable. Space is what it is for a car of just over 4 meters: good for front passengers, less for those on the rear seat. We turn on the car and leave.
This Audi A1 under test is equipped with a 1.0 hp petrol engine with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. An engine that has a convincing grit at high revs, a bit ‘less bass. However, it is an extremely quiet powertrain and a park for consumption: in our short test drive, we stayed on 6 liters per 100 km. Excellent steering, not very reactive but that draws the curves without any kind of problem. The car is very comfortable, thanks to the set-up at a regular pace. It’s a car designed for the city, but that turns out fun even in the hairpin bends: there are four different driving modes, inserting the dynamic mode the shock absorbers become stiffer and the car is fantastic to be inserted in the corners.
The new Audi A1, thanks to its design and its amazing technology on board, is designed for young people and digital natives, who would be totally at ease on board. A car of great substance, which also like to appear. But the price is anything but for young people.
2020 Audi A1 Price
The New Audi A1 will be priced at around $ 25600 for the most basic model and $ 32,000 for the highest model.
