2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Engine Specs

We tried the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a hybrid electric-powered SUV. Our opinions in the test drive, price and technical data of the car.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a hybrid SUV that aims to show everyone how the technology developed by Mitsubishi can be efficient on everyday roads and beyond. We had the opportunity to try this SUV, which in fact was born electric and distributes the power and its energies to exploit as much as possible the electric motor, along with an urban and extra-urban route, just to tell you how it behaves.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Redesign

There is no doubt that this Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a child of Japanese design. In a certain sense, it is reassuring because it shows itself with the classic lines of the brand. Lines that in a sense can be broken, because they do not fully reflect the European stylistic canons but go far beyond, end up some concepts. Already the chrome surfaces of the bodywork, of the inserts that are found both at the front and at the rear, give a particular aspect, above all because they reflect the light. But the front block, the snout of this Outlander, although alive with more mature traits than in the past, is evidence that it does not abandon tradition, with optical groups positioned at the top and developing horizontally, while below the corners of the bumper seem swollen and muscular.

When you board the Outlander PHEV, you are captured from the display in the center of the dashboard. Even more than the four-spoke steering wheel, even more than the strange gear selector. This probably because it is a very pronounced touchscreen display to the outside, but also because it has a good quality and definition of the images, in addition to the fact that it has a very complete menu in terms of functions. Shame that the navigator is missing. In this the house was mandatory: for the policy the navigator is not provided as an option, because now we are all equipped with a smartphone with navigator and we can exploit that, thus inviting a massive use of Mirror Link.

The instrumentation is classic and digital only has the display in the center, between analogue tachometer and tachometer: from here read all the possible data on the car, such as driving mode or battery status, even if the information starts to crowd when select some menu pages such as consumption pages. Meanwhile, overcome the curiosity to observe the steering wheel from the large crown and also complete with the commands for the phone and some driving assistance, you can move to the central tunnel.

The gear selector is special, but nearby there are the Sport button in plain sight – unlike the Eco button placed under the infotainment display, a little hidden – and the commands for the type of approach we want to drive: electric or mixed only, with engines that work in combination.

Hybrid

One of the most interesting things about this 2020 Outlander PHEV is that you can choose how and from which source you want to get motricity to the wheels, but in any case he will always try to optimize everything. The plug-in hybrid engines, when they have the thermal engine on, have a parallel connection between the thermal and the electric, so as to exploit the power of both. Actually, on the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV the motors can both act in series and in parallel. It means that the heat engine can act as both a simple range extender, that is, recharges the battery while the electric motor turns the wheels, both to help the electric motor. In this last case we have the maximum power available, because the energy for the traction comes from both engines.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Performance

Well, if the electric is the flagship of this 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, we have not seen any reason not to make the most of it. The battery sends power to the two electric motors, one per axle, and guarantees the benefits of an all-wheel drive. Linear, silent and with a couple immediately available. Let’s say that traveling in electric is definitely a great way to roam quiet, even for over 30 km overall, because selecting the EV button asks the heat engine never to turn on … and means to keep off a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle. Unlike the speech when the electric autonomy begins to fail, in that case or you get attached to the power outlet of the house, once you have arrived, or must enter into the heat engine. Which, as explained above, or charge the battery, or send traction to the front axle or both.

Anyone who prefers to have all 224 horsepower available from the combination of a heat engine and electric motors may have no qualms to exploit the total thrust, but we have glimpsed in the range extender a good idea, especially when you stop at the traffic lights in town or you stay stop for a while ‘bottled: away to recover a little’ energy and then exploit it at the first restart.

Then it is clear that there is also energy recovery during braking, among other things controlled by paddle behind the steering wheel that are not the gears, mind you! 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has an automatic transmission of the CVT type, so it does not really have gears, but paddles are used to decide whether you want more or less engine braking, which means accumulating more or less energy when leaving the accelerator.

Well everything is good for optimizing the energy sector, although we must admit that the car itself is quite “forward” in the management of resources. On the subject of driver assistance, there is a rather standard suite, with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and the warning of inadvertent overtaking of the lane.
