We tested the 2020 Renault Twingo LPG, a city car that cuts down the running costs with the gas system.

On The Road
Renault Twingo LPG makes the city, the urban traffic and narrow alleys the ideal battleground. A terrain along which is untangled with an almost unequaled agility, thanks to a turning radius of 4.3 meters guaranteed by the fact that the engine is placed behind. Objectively, the engineers were able to allow the wheels to turn more, all in favor of not only the ability to wriggle in city traffic but also to be able to park with two simple maneuvers in 99% of cases. But the real heart of our test lies in the GPL turbo engine, a 90 horsepower that with the mix of 31 liters of LPG and 35 of petrol could overcome without problems the 1000 km of total autonomy, according to what the house says.
The plant is a Landi Renzo mounted directly in the factory, which acts on an aluminum engine with pistons with graphite surface treatment – which means greater smoothness and better engine response – but above all with Euro 6D-Temp homologation. But the most attentive of you who are reading a doubt should begin to grip: the position of the LPG tank. In the most classic of configurations, the toroidal LPG tank is located under the floor of the boot, in place of what should be the spare wheel, but on a car that has exactly the engine in that area you need to find more space.
On the 2020 Renault Twingo LPG, they found it under the floor, in the front area. In short, under the feet of driver and passenger there is a 31 liter gas tank, then well connected to the engine and which is also the cause of the adoption of the 5-speed manual transmission for this version only. But in the meantime this turbo LPG really works great. First because there is no detachment compared to when it is fueled, secondly because a full LPG costs very little and maintenance is scheduled with a change of liquid state filter at 60 thousand km (or 3 years) and change gaseous state filter at 40 thousand kilometers. Too bad it suffers a bit ‘of turbo lag when we crush the accelerator pedal at low revolutions – we do not know how to say exactly why … the tachometer is not there! – or when we leave and re-press the accelerator.
But overcoming this initial hurdle, all that remains is the pleasure of having a discrete thrust, given that 90 hp power a real featherweight, to be able to bypass the stress of difficult parking and a car that, after all, also dampens the bumps well. On the cobblestones there are no problems, you do not “dance” too much as the reduced step could let you imagine, but on the harshest disconnections you can feel the impact. But there we challenge (almost) anyone who does not let him know.
